Rev. Dr. Kurt Appel
Rev. Dr. Kurt Appel became pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church on June 16, 2015. Although a native of New Orleans, Kurt has spent his entire ministry serving congregations on the Gulf Coast. In addition, Kurt has worked the last decade as a consultant with the Church Division of Cargill Associates, a stewardship development firm dedicated to strategic planning and fundraising for churches and organizations across the United States. Because of his background in church development and experience in the local church, Kurt’s ministry has been focused upon helping churches become disciple-making congregations.
While most of Kurt’s hobbies and interests are seasonal in nature, he does enjoy reading, especially books by Lee Child, Michael Connolly and James Lee Burke. An avid sports fan who loves a crowd, Kurt enjoys attending football and baseball games at any level, especially when they involve his son, the New Orleans Saints or the LSU Fighting Tigers. He is also a big classic rock music fan and loves attending concerts and festivals.
Kurt and Claudia have been married 29 years and have three children – Meg, who is married to John, and live in Austin, Texas; Olivia, who is in college at LSU; and Blake, who attends Itawamba Community College and pitches for the Indians baseball team.
Prior to entering the ordained ministry, Kurt was an engineer with Sharp Electric, Inc., a major commercial and industrial electrical contractor. He completed his undergraduate work in Mechanical Engineering at Louisiana Tech University, earned a Master of Divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, and received his Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia Theological Seminary.
