July 6-10

St. Teresa of Avila once wrote “Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which to look out as Christ’s compassion to the world; Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good; Yours are the hands with which he is to bless men now.”

At Asbury, we try as best we can to live out that quote. Our motto here is to “Be Salt and Light” and to really try to impact the world for Jesus in every way possible. We do this through the use of technology and social media, through relevant and passionate worship, and through focusing all of our energy on Jesus and His Kingdom.

Each summer, we see that vision come to pass through our youth BaseCamp. This event, spearheaded by Brian Hinnant, Asbury’s Missions & Discipleship pastor, seeks to enable youth from all over the Pine Belt, as well as Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana, to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

But, that’s not the end of what these young people do. They gather together each night for worship and preaching. This year’s theme is “Satisfy “  All the worship speakers will focus their talks on how Jesus satisfies our needs and what that means to our lives today. The camp also features live worship music, led by an eclectic, multi-denominational, praise band.  Each day, students will go out and work at various work sites in and around the city of Hattiesburg, including home repair/construction, lawn care, nursing homes, day camps, and more.  Each night, they return to have dinner, then uplifting worship.

This summer at BaseCamp, youth will change their community, and in that work, God will change them. As Peter Boehler told John Welsey, “Preach faith till you have it; and then, because you have it, you will preach faith.” These youth “preach” faith with their hands and feet, and in that, they received it.

And as we support our youth through our giving, God is able to allow us to be part of that work. Thank you for helping to support them and may we continue to be faithful and do our part!
